Jimmie Rivera vs Cody Stamann
Jimmie Rivera (-135) (22-4-0)
Jimmie Rivera comes into this matchup on a 2-fight losing skid, yet those losses came against newly crowned champion Petr Yan and top contender Aljimain Sterling. Rivera actually looked really good against Yan, out-landing him in both total and significant strikes by a good amount. Unfortunately for him, he got dropped at the end of the 1st and 2nd rounds and lost an unanimous decision. Expect him to come into this fight with a lot of confidence after watching what Yan was able to do to Aldo just a few days ago, and also what Sterling was able to do to Sandhagen just a few weeks ago. With a win over Stamann, Rivera could find himself right back at the top of the bantamweight division.
Cody Stamann (+115) (19-2-1)
Cody Stamann is coming off of an impressive, emotional win just four weeks ago. He went up to featherweight and won a decision over the rising Brian Kelleher just days after the death of his 18-year old brother. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s grieved, recovered, and prepared for Rivera in such a short timeframe. He’ll need to have full focus on this matchup because Rivera is on a 2-fight losing streak and will have no mercy. Stamann’s jab looked very good against Kelleher and it’ll be key to him having success against Rivera. If he can pick up the win, he’ll move to 2-0 in 2020 and continue his rise up the bantamweight rankings.
Prediction: Jimmie Rivera via Decision
This fight will take place at featherweight but both men are true bantamweights. Stamann will have a slight height advantage but Rivera will have a 4-inch reach advantage. I expect Rivera’s recent experience against top guys like Yan, Sterling, and Moraes to be the difference in this matchup. He’s had a chance to see Yan and Sterling rise to the top and he knows he was able to take both of those guys the distance. He’ll also be able to take what he learned in those fights and utilize it against Stamann. Take Jimmie Rivera by Decision.
